Chili Challenge 2005

The preparation of a cycling tour like the Chili Challenge 2005 is quite a tour. We added some information about the items in the boxes on the right as soon as we had it figured out.

The budget is a rough estimation of the costs of the whole operation. We show it here to give an impression to interested cyclists of the feasibility of such a ride. >>>

For a trip of long duration you need certain documents. We give an update on the situation for Dutch citizens. >>>

The tickets as they have been booked. For waving goodbye or a 'Tickertape Parade' you're a bite late, but here's the schedule. >>>

To account for the choice of equipment you can best view that page itself. More information about sponsored items can be found on the forum. >>>

The exact route that we have cycled is explained on the page the route (this includes satellite images). >>>

At the bottom of this page are the links to interesting pages about cycling in Chile, mountainbiking, product sponsors and the charitable goal.>>>

The Budget

We chose to go with new equipment (new bikes) and a complicated flight schedule (different airport of arrival and departure). This makes it more expensive compared to having your equipment already and choosing a simple flight. The costs are per person.

Equipment and clothing: 650 euro
Bike: 1300 euro
Flight: 1350 euro
Lodging and fares: 1200 euro
Food, drinks, internet: 1375 euro
Rest (vaccination, books, electronics): 150

Total costs: 6025 euro

Passport / Visa
Dutch citizens don't need a visa to travel to Chile or to stay there for more than three months (90 days). However, they do need to have a passport that's valid longer than the estimated date of departure. If one wants to stay longer, one has to apply for a visa for a temporary stay. In general, this applies to persons with relatives in Chile, scientist, artists, and so on. Leaving the country within three months and then returning again leaves another three months to stay. For Dutch citizens the regulations for Argentina are similar to those for Chile. (source: consulate of Chile and consulate of Argentina)

Certificate of vaccination
It's recommended to have vaccinations for diphtheria, tetanus, polio and hepatitis-A (source: Landelijk Coördinatie Centrum Reizigersadvisering). You do not need them on the other hand. Rabies does exist in Chile. If you get bitten or scratched by a dog, you should seek medical attention immediately. The disease can be cured, but only through a series of stomach injections administered before the onset of symptoms, which can appear within 24 hours or lie dormant for months, and include irrational behaviour, fear of water and foaming at the mouth. There is vaccine, but it's expensive and doesn't prevent you from contracting rabies. though it does buy you time to get to hospital. Cholera and the Hantavirus are also mentioned as dangerous diseases. Good hygiene and avoiding litter, waste and anything to do with rats are the best tips. (source: The Rough Guide to Chile)

Insurance papers
Insurance papers come in handy in case of theft, robbery or an accident. Don't forget the alarm number of you insurance company.

Flight tickets
The flight tickets need to be stowed away safely. Remember to confirm you return flight in time.
